On Tuesday, April 28, The Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island will host the first session of its virtual book club. The first book to be discussed will be Yiftach Reicher Atir’s fiction novel, “The English Teacher” (Penguin Books, 2016), which tells the story of former Mossad agent, Rachel Goldschmitt.

After attending her father’s funeral, Rachel empties her bank account and disappears; her former handler, Ehud, is sent him to track her down. As Ehud retraces Rachel’s career as a spy, he soon discovers that an agent’s assumed identity and her real one can blur. In the midst of a high-risk, high-stakes investigation, Ehud begins to question whether he ever knew his agent at all.

The one-hour discussion session is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Zoom. The club, led by Lisa Maybruch, manager of adult programs at the Alliance, is open to all. Meetings are expected to take place every three to four weeks, and participants will select the book for the next meeting from a list provided by the Jewish Book Council. There is no cost to participate, but readers are responsible for obtaining their own books.
